level 3 in basic expedition leadership training (BELAT)

Pre Requisites: You must be 17 years old or above
You must be physically fit to undertake walking in a lowland environment and be able to carry a small rucksack.

Course Information: The Sports Leader UK Level 3 Certificate in Basic Expedition Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification that trains and qualifies teachers, youth workers and other members of the community to lead groups of walkers in lowland countryside, impart the skills and knowledge required to undertake a day walk, have responsibility for the care for others whilst undertaking a day walk in lowland countryside and plan and lead overnight base and mobile camps. The course will give you all the skills required to plan, supervise, instruct and oversee a lowland trip in a modular scheme of 4 weekends. There will be also be opportunities to deliver lessons, practice navigation and learn important campcraft skills whilst undertaking an overnight expedition. You will then be given a personalised action plan for you to then go away and gain further experience before presenting yourself for assessment.

Assessment: There is no assessment, as this is a training course, but you will receive a personalised action plan to help you consolidate your learning in preparation for your assessment.

What is provided? We always suggest that you use your own equipment if you have it but please show it to your instructor on the first day of the course to check its serviceability and stability. We will provide you with course notes, a course handbook and workbook, maps, compasses and expedition equipment on request. If you want to buy any equipment prior to your course please have a look at our shop. It can be sent to you in preparation for your course or we can have it ready for you to use on the first day.

level 3 in basic expedition leadership assessment (BELAA)

Pre Requisites: 18 years old or above. Evidence of 8 days personal walking in a lowland environment. 30 hours voluntary leading. First Aid certificate.

Course Information: This assessment weekend can either be taken immediately after your training course, as long as we are happy that you have the correct experience, or after a consolidation period to gain further experience. The weekend will be based around a 2 day, one night expedition which will be planned, lead and navigated by you. During the two days you will have to show clear understanding of all you learnt during your training course and deliver a short lesson on a topic from the training course. All the information you require, including route planning and lesson topics will be given to you once you have had your place confirmed on the course. 

Assessment: The assessment will be continuous throughout the weekend but will be clearly outlined to you in your joining instructions and on arrival. There will be two instructors/ assessors as part of the weekend who will be looking to ensure you pass and make you feel at ease throughout.

You will have the chance to explore commincation skills and the roles within the team in more detail.
